Or so I was taught growing up. But having stretched my wings a bit and landing in Alabama, I'd have to say from personal experience that....it doesn't have to be that way.
It doesn't have to take until May to have gorgeous flowers blooming all around you.
They are everywhere here, and in nearly every color, too. Big ones, small ones...some so fragrant that you just have to stop what you're doing and take a big sniff ! It's wonderful!
They can wait for their flowers up in Maine, but not us. We are in the middle of wonderful blooms all around!
