Our Arrival

Once we had decided that leaving Alaska was the only way to survive, we went on the hunt for "the right mode of exit". My husband and I had a wonderful time looking at all different kinds of RV's, fifth wheels, plane ticket costs, and all else in between. We determined the kind of money that we could put into the "transporter" and the kind of money it would take to fund our trip out.
Once all this was determined, it narrowed our search down some...some. We knew that we weren't driving out with a $300,000 Motor Home. We knew that we could not fly out and send our belongings. Not only would it take three months for our stuff to get there, but it would cost an ungodly amount of money.
So, as we cruised around to the different shops and garages, we stopped and checked out every RV on the side of the road with a For Sale sign stuck up in the windshield. Then we passed this Park & Sell that had several different campers on it. We stopped. And there she was! We both just knew! She was The One! She wasn't much to the regular Joe looking at her, but she was perfect for us and our family's needs. A Brougham, '82 conversion van. Sleeps six. Yes, we are a family of eight, but Roger and I drove the whole time other than hotel stops from time to time, so it worked. It fit on the ferry from Haines, Alaska to Washington just fine, too.
Now that we found her, paid for her and have her home where we could work on her, clean her, deodorize her and such, our hearts were full.
It is getting late in the season. It's all the way into November now. Its freezing, snowing and not very good travel weather, but its time to go. Our stuff left two weeks prior and our ferry date was coming up. We left around midnight and drove straight thru to Haines. It was treacherous to say the least! Mountains, curves, snow, no snow banks to guide you. No tire tracks from someone in front of you. Nothing really to go by except the two ditches indicating blackness to swallow you up if you veered too far one way or the other. It was tricky all the way to the end with slush and snow. It was bad, but Roger made it thru bringing his family safely to our hotel in Haines.
Here are some Haines, Alaska photos:
